The Zimbabwe UNWTO Candidate for Secretary of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Eng. Walter Mzembi, landed an AfricanUnion (AU) Leadership position in Lome, Togo on 17 March 2017.
African Tourism, Energy and Infrastructure Ministers in Togo for the AU STC Meetings reaffirm their faith in Zimbabwe leadership in Tourism and elected the Hon. Eng. Walter Mzembi, Tourism & Hospitality Industry Government of Zimbabwe, as their Vice Chair of the Bureau of the AU-STC.
This is seen as another important step to accept the Zimbabwe minister to lead UNWTO starting 2018.
Delegacija Zimbabveja na prvem rednem zasedanju Specializiranega tehničnega odbora (STC) Afriške unije (AU) za promet, transkontinentalno in medregionalno infrastrukturo, energijo in turizem, ki jo vodi namestnik ministra za turizem in gostinstvo, g. Anastancia Ndhlovu (poslanka) je Zimbabve naredila ponosen, potem ko je bil južnoafriški narod soglasno izvoljen na mesto podpredsednice. AU-STC se je sestal 17. marca 2017 v Lomeju v Togu in izvolil predsedstvo na podlagi pravila št. 16 poslovnika Komisije Afriške unije za infrastrukturo in energijo.
Predsedstvo sestavljajo predsednik, 3 podpredsedniki in poročevalec. Zimbabve je bil izvoljen za 2. podpredsednika, ki predstavlja sektor turizma in južnoafriško regijo v AU-STC za naslednji dve leti, do leta 2019. Drugi člani predsedstva, ki se bodo sestali enkrat letno, so Togo - predsednik (predstavnik prometni sektor in zahodnoafriško regijo), Mavretanija-1. podpredsednik (ki zastopa energetski sektor in severnoafriško regijo), Etiopija-3. podpredsednik (zastopa energetski sektor in vzhodnoafriško regijo) in Kongo - poročevalec (ki zastopa prometni sektor in srednjeafriška regija). Urad je izvršni organ ministrov, odgovornih za sektorje infrastrukture, energetike, prometa in turizma, zadolžen za zagotavljanje politične in nadzorne vodilne vloge delovnih programov Komisije Afriške unije za infrastrukturo in energijo ter specializiranega tehničnega odbora strokovnjakov.
Izvolitev Zimbabveja v predsedstvo Komisije Afriške unije za infrastrukturo in energijo je minila komaj eno leto po še enem uspešnem predsedovanju Zimbabveja AU, ki ga je opravil njegova ekscelenca predsednik, Cde RG Mugabe, od januarja 2015 do januarja 2016. Sledi teh volitvah, navdušeni namestnik ministra Hon. Anastancia Ndhlovu je dejala: »Te volitve so odobritev in potrditev velikega dela, ki ga je opravil največji sin Afrike, njegova ekscelenca, predsednik RG Mugabe, ko je usmerjal vrh Afriške unije k prelomnemu sprejetju Agende 2063, zasidrane na 2030 Cilji trajnostnega razvoja. To je res zelo razburljivo in samo potrjuje zapuščino neprimerljivega vodenja njegove ekscelence, predsednika.
The election of Zimbabwe to lead the Southern Region of Africa in the Bureau of the African Union Commission on Infrastructure and Energy representing the Tourism sector, is happening when the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon. Dr. Walter Mzembi has successfully submitted his application to become the next Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), for the next 4 years, from 2018 to 2021, to the Headquarters of the Madrid-based global tourism organization. Hon. Dr Walter Mzembi is currently continuing with his world-wide outreach effort to garner international support for the countrys bid represented by him to secure the top job at the UNWTO. Elections for the next Secretary General will take place at the UNWTO Headquarters in Madrid, Spain from 11 to 12 May 2017, during the course of the 105th session of the Organisations 33 member Executive Council meeting.
Asked what the election into AU-STC Bureau means to Zimbabwe’s bid for the top UNWTO post, Deputy Minister Anastancia Ndhlovu had this to say, “I can confirm that the election of Zimbabwe further re-affirms the visionary leadership qualities of Hon. Minister Mzembi, as the current Chairperson of the UNWTO Regional Commission for Africa (CAF) and the African Union-endorsed candidate for the UNWTO post, who has been very articulate on Zimbabwe’s and African tourism issues at a global scale. Therefore, this election will definitely be a boost to Hon. Minister Mzembi’s election bid, since the policy issues we pushed through to the apex of the African Union Commission on Infrastructure and Energy today reflect his vision for Africa’s tourism and the global tourism industry”.
Soglasna izvolitev Zimbabveja za vodenje urada AU-STC na področju turizma je prišla v ozadju dolgotrajne razprave na sestankih STC, v kateri je Zimbabve zavzel stališče za vključevanje in institucionalizacijo turizma v Agendo 2063 AU in njegove strukture. Odlična predstavitev in artikulacija teh političnih vprašanj v Zimbabveju se je obrestovala, ko se je Komisija Afriške unije za infrastrukturo in energijo strinjala, da bo do decembra 2018 ustanovila direktorat ali enoto za turizem v strukturah organizacije, da bi zagotovila politično podporo in usklajevanje predlagana Afriška turistična organizacija. Trenutno ni fizične prisotnosti turizma v vseh strukturah AUC, kljub slavljenju tega sektorja kot tretje gospodarske dejavnosti po gorivih in kemikalijah v svetovnem merilu.
The UNWTO 2016 Report indicates that global tourism grew by 4.6% in the year 2015 while Africa declined by 3% in the same year, the trend Zimbabwe is fighting to reverse for the benefit of all African countries and other developing tourist destinations of the world.
